He bought the diary in order to keep his ideas down. In the text, Orwell asks, “It was absurd since the writing was not more dangerous than the initial act of opening the diary nevertheless for a moment he felt emptied to rip out the ruined pages and abandon the project entirely,” (18). However, his ultimate defeat is a reminder of the dangers of opposing totalitarianism. His struggle against the oppressive government is inspiring.
